Legality

So someone tell me if this is illegal or not before I get myself in trouble. I have a little bit older computer that had it’s operating system taken out of it or something like that. It used to have Windows XP on it. I have a newer laptop that came with backup CD’s and one of them is the Windows Vista operating system. Being as my older computer doesn’t have an OS I want to use this CD to give it one. Is that legal or do I really have to go spend hundreds of dollars to buy something I already have? I mean, it makes sense that both computers belong to me and so does the disc so it would just be illogical that it is illegal, but I don’t know. Maybe it has to be licensed or something like that.

Vista + birthing pains

I just got a new laptop, which I bought because the price was great and it had descrete VRAM -256, which is almost impossible to get unless you want to spend $2000 or more for a laptop.

I thought to then downgrade to xp, but quickly found out about the trouble people ran into that had tried it. I know something about osses, but do not have that much hands on experience. So have decided to stay with vista.

I have vista ultimate 64-bit edition, and I would like to install adobe cs2 and studio8. I have had problems finding out if these are vista 64-bit compatible, or if it will screw up the os if I tried to install them.
I checked with adobe and the only info I was able to find, was that some people had problems and some had not. There was no indication if vista 64 would have problems, as I think both suites are 32-bit. I thought that was one of the most useless statements that I have ever read. On top of that it is impossible to find practical help with vista, as everyone seems to be on a slow learning curve and needless to say microsoft is practically useless for help. What info they have seems to deal with only the 32-bit versions, which in my case is no help.

So can anyone tell me if it is OK to install either one or both?

Suspicious Behaviour with Vista CPU, Memory, Disk

Hi,

I recently purchased a laptop (2 core duo, 1 GB ram) with Vista. Over the last week or so I have noticed suspicious behaviour with the CPU, Memory and Disk activity spiking and maxing out. It even affects mouse behaviour causing jumpy mouse (optical) movement.

In the Resource manager you can see the spikes with just one Firefox instance running with two tabs.

I have scanned the computer with StopZilla, and AVG (free edition) and while I did find several Trojans initially, it now scans clean.

Before I give up and reformat with Ubuntu, is there anything I should check for?

Transfer to XBox360 very slow

Son installed the 32 bit Vista as a trial and could transfer to his Xbox360 fine, Xbox showing 9 on the transfer bar. He then decided to go 64 bit so I’ve got the 32 bit now(!). Since going to the 64 bit version, the transfers have slowed right down and are pretty much useless - Xbox shows 1-2 on the transfer bar. All drivers have been updated and he can access the web and download in excess of 200Kb so I’m guessing his network is fine. Any ideas as to why the transfers would slow down so much between the different OS’s ??

TIA

Vista issues incl. Defender and windows updates

Just got this comp about 2 months ago and having issues where Windows Defender refuses to boot up and I can’t receive automatic or manually induced windows updates. When I try to kick off a manual update it tells me error code 80096001. If I try to start Defender it says application failed to initialize: 0×800106ba.

Can can I delete it and re-download it? Any suggestions?

Thx in advance.

Power Supply - Request for information

Im seeking information on a recommended power supply for a system that will probably be replaced in a year so I only want to spend what is required to upgrade not boast.

I have a AMD X2 system running a 3800+ X2 on 2GB ram with two SATA 2 drives, 2x 6" fans plus standard fans, Generic 6600 GPU, on a MS-7100 MSI mainboard. Currently it has a 450w PSU with 18A on the red. Vista Ultimate 32bit is OS

I upgraded my GPU to a Gigabyte GeForce 8600GT 256MB 8600 GT. On installation everything appeared to go well. Then I lost the second core on the CPU and then I got intermittent freezing and failure of the system. No errors in logs, so no driver issue.

I reverted back to the old 6600 and AOK again.

So lack of watts/Amps is the culprit. The question is how much more juice do I need. Do I get a 500w/600w/800w. What do I need to run the card at full pelt without overspending.

Thanks in advance.
